Oh Therminal, met je grote hoge rode schouw. Waar je vroeger als thermische centrale het Technicum verwarmde, zet je nu elke week ons hart in vuur en vlam.
*al zingend* Aan de oevers, van de Schelde, zit verschooooooolen onder aan de berg… ene kleine, kleine stookcentrale … die je vanooooop de trappen ziet!
We hebben vorige week prachtig gezongen en verbroederd met onze collega’s van het USO in Leuven, een avond om nooit meer te vergeten (tenzij je net iets te veel adjes deed natuurlijk)! Ook de eerste repetitie was een voltreffer. In de woorden van Steven:
“Goed begonnen is half gewonnen! Cliché maar geen fake news voor wat betreft de repetitie van GUSO woensdagavond… voor ’n eerste schets kan het tellen”
Volgende week schetsen we verder, voor de eerste keer met solist. Bereid dus zeker volgende passages goed voor:

De deuren van de Therminal zijn altijd open (zeker als je een beetje spierkracht hebt), ze zullen niet sluiten voor studenten die te laat zijn, maar zorg er toch maar voor dat je op tijd bent. Het GUSO stond bijna op de zwarte lijst van de Therminal (wegens een akkefietje met geluidsoverlast), zorg dat jij niet op Marieke’s zwarte lijst terechtkomt (door niet-verwittigde afwezigheid of te laat komen).
De Therminal werd gebouwd op een perceel middenin een woonwijk in het stadcentrum. Dat de Thermi vroeger omringd was door kleine arbeidshuisjes is nauwelijks nog merkbaar. Alleen in de Hoveniersberg, dat vroeger een waterstraatje was, zijn nog restanten van de oude arbeidershuisjes te vinden.
De beslissing van de universiteit om een uitgebreid technisch complex mét stookcentrale te bouwen in een woonwijk lijkt niet zo’n heel strategische beslissing. Denk jij in staat te zijn om blindelings niet-zo-strategische orders op te volgen? Of neem jij liever het logistieke voortouw? Sluit je dan aan bij het logistiek comité! Deze kleine groep mensen zijn de vaste helpers van onze logistiekers Siebe en Mathijs en staan (net iets meer dan de andere GUSO’ers) te springen om hen een handje te helpen.
Je lidmaatschap van het logistiek comité levert jouw heel wat voordelen op. Zo wordt je binnen het semester expert in het inladen van camionettes en materiaalkoten, krijg je af en toe waarschijnlijk een cola’tje cadeau (en misschien ook wel een super cool Logistiek Comité accessoire), én bovendien wordt er mogelijk een oogje dichtgeknepen als je bij het volgende flyermoment voor de concerten of afwasbeurt op stage niet echt zin hebt om deel te nemen.

De Therminal, gebouwd in 1938, was een gigantisch stookcomplex dat op basis van kolen en stoom de omliggende universitaire gebouwen van verwarming voorzag. Het was dus als het ware een sponsor die zorgde voor een warme ondersteuning van de studenten.
Mmm, sponsors… zie je mij al afkomen? We zijn nog steeds op zoek naar een enthousiaste GUSO’er die benieuwd is naar hoe het is om in het bestuur te zitten en die met zijn liefde voor het GUSO allerlei sponsors kan overtuigen om het GUSO een (financieel of materieel) hart onder de riem te steken. PR Sponsor is geen zware bestuursfunctie. Ideaal om op je gemakje in het bestuur te rollen!

Architect J.-N. Cloquet heeft de Therminal prachtig langs het water gesitueerd. Ook binnenin de Thermi werden alle stoomketels, stoomturbines en elektrische appartuur van thermische kleine centrales ten opzichte van elkaar gepositioneerd.
Heb jij ook iets met ordenen en rangschikken en positioneren? Wordt dan de nieuwe ORKESTREGISSEUR van het GUSO! Een orkestregisseur zorgt ervoor dat elke muzikant bij het begin van de repetitie een stoel en pupiter heeft, dat Steven zijn podium mooi in het midden staat en dat hij recht in de ogen van de hoboïst(e) kan kijken. Als orkestregisseur overzie en delegeer je dus het klaarzetten van de Trechterzaal.

In de Trechterzaal vind je drie omgekeerde ‘trechters’. Die heb je waarschijnlijk al wel eens gezien. (Of je hebt ze niet gezien en bent er vervolgens met je hoofd tegen gebotst.) Deze drie betonnen trechters zijn eigenlijk kolenbunkers die gebruikt werden om de kolenvoeding van de stoommachines te behouden.
Net zoals stoommachines gevuld worden met kolen en concertzalen met publiek, wordt de GUSO kas voornamelijk gevuld met monetaire bijdragen van muziekliefhebbende sympathisanten. We zetten nog graag even volgende secties in de spotlight voor hun bijdrage aan de ticketverkoop voor SAGA:
- Eerste violen (Hoera! Jullie krijgen een etentje met jullie sectie, verzorgd door team sfeerbeheer, de Doodle volgt snel)
- Tweede violen
- Celli
Blazers, niet getreurd, jullie krijgen dit semester opnieuw de kans om jullie steen(kool)tje bij te dragen.
Het Wereld Wijde Web bevat slechts een beperkt aantal weetjes over de Therminal. Jullie liggen er waarschijnlijk niet van wakker, maar voor een secretaris is onwetendheid een vervelende kwestie
Wie nog wakker ligt van onwetendheid is ons reisbestuur. Woensdag zal in de Therminal een teder tafereel plaatsvinden wanneer Maarten B. terugkeert uit Hamburg en M&M eindelijk herenigd worden. M&M zouden graag weten of jij meegaat op stage naar Hamburg van 2 tot 7 april. Breng woensdag het ingevulde strookje over de stage mee en geef het af aan Mathijs of Maarten. Ben je het strookje kwijt? Ga hen dan even gewoon vertellen dat je, natuurlijk, 100% zeker, zonder twijfel, geen haar op je hoofd dat er aan denkt om in thuis te blijven, mee naar Hamburg gaat!
De oplettende lezer heeft ondertussen de puzzel wel gemaakt en weet nu dat de Therminal zijn naam dankt aan zijn vroegere functie van thermische centrale.
Het is een naam die klinkt als een klok(kenspel) en dat is nu net wat we nog nodig hebben voor onze concertreeks in mei. Heb jij een schitterende naam voor onze concerten in gedachten? Drop die dan met je naam of in alle anonimiteit in onze virtuele ideeëndoos!

Last week we sang beautifully with our collegues of the USO in Leuven. It was a night t oremember (unless you drank just a little too much beer and don’t remember a thing)! The first rehearsal was also a success. Steven was very pleased about the first run through of the pieces.
Next week, we continue and we’ll play with our soloist Paul Heyman for the first time. Be prepared!

The doors of the Therminal are always open (especially to those with a little bit of muscles), they will not close for students who are late, but it’s best to make sure that you’re on time. GUSO was almost on the Therminal’s Black List (after a couple of noise complaints), it’s best to make sure that you don’t end up on Marieke’s Black List for not showing up for rehearsal or for being late.
The Therminal was build on a piece of land in the middle of a residential area in the middle of the city centre. It is hard to imagine the Therminal surrounded by small workers’ houses. You can only notice a couple of old houses in the Hoverniersber, which used to be a water street.
The university’s decision to build a very large technical complex with a heating plant (if that’s even a word, Google, I’m not sure) in the middle of a residential area doesn’t seem very strategic. Do you think you’re capable of following blind orders? Or do you prefer to make strategic logistical decisions? Then you can join our Logistiek Comité! This small groups of helpers of our logisitics team will be their go-to persons when they need helping hands.
Becoming a member of the Logistiek Comité will make Siebe and Mathijs very happy. It also comes with some benefits. First of all, you will learn how to properly load a small truck full of instruments, you will receive a nice fresh Coca Cola sometimes and we will maybe look the other way when you don’t feel like flyering for the concerts or when you don’t feel like doing the dishes during the rehearsal weekends.

The Therminal was build in 1938 as a gigantic heating complex that produced heat for the surrounding university buildings with the steam produced by burning coal. You could say that is was a kind of sponsor that supported students by providing heat.
Mmm, sponsors… you see where I’m headed right? We’re still looking for an enthusiastic GUSO’er that is curious about what it’s like to be in the GUSO board and who would love to use his/her love for GUSO to convince sponsors to provide us with financial or material support.

Architect J.-N. Cloquet has situated the Therminal beautifully next to the water. On the inside he orchestrated the steamkettles, steamturbines and electrical appliances of the thermic centrale so that they would all fit in the Therminal.
Do you like structuring things and orchestrating a beautifully symmetric scene? Then you might want to become our Orchestra Director! The Orchestra Director makes sure that every musician has a chair and a music stand, that Steven has his little stage to stand on and that he can make direct eye contact with the oboist by looking straight ahead. As an Orchestra Director you will oversee the preparing of the Trechterzaal before every rehearsal.

In the Trechterzaal you can see three reversed funnels. Or you didn’t see them and bumbed your head against one of them. Those concrete funnels used to be full of coal. Providing the steam engines with coal to keep running.
Just like the steam engines had to be filled with coal, our concert halls have to be filled with audiences. Last semester, we almost sold out all our concerts, and we have three sections who did especially well selling tickets:
- First violins
- Second violins
- Celli
Winds, don’t be sad, this semester you will have a new opportunity to fill our engine with coal and to sell more tickets than the strings.
The World Wide Web only has a limited amount of facts about the Therminal. You probably don’t think this is important at all, but for a secretary, ignorance is a difficult thing.
Our travel team is also not very keen on ignorance. On Wednesday, you will be able to see a beautiful scene at the Therminal when Maarten B. returns from his Erasmus in Hamburg and M&M will finally by reunited. M&M would like to know if you will join us for the rehearsal and travel trip to Hamburg, April 2nd till 7th. Fill in the little paper you received and give it to Mathijs or Maarten B. Did you lose your little piece of paper? No worries, just go tell them in person that you are 100%, without a doubt, definitely, without even thinking of not going to Hamburg, sure that you will join GUSO in Hamburg!
If you paid attention reading this newsletter, you have probably already figured out that the name ‘Therminal’ has its origins in the past function of the building.
It’s a name that sounds like a bell! And that is exactly what we are looking for for our upcoming concerts. Do you know a magnificent name for our concert featuring Dvorak and Elgar? Drop the title you thought of with or without your name in our virtual ideabox!
