Ik moet zeggen dat mijn Star Wars kennis niet zeer uitgebreid is, maar een nieuwsbrief op 4 mei kan je toch niet laten liggen? Dus aan al de Star Wars fans: May the 4th be with you!
Volgende week vertrekken we met ons ruimteschip voor de laatste missie van dit semester, dus hierbij alles dat je moet weten om die missie tot een goed einde te brengen!
Bedankje van (en voor) logistiek
Team Logistiek wil jullie graag bedanken voor jullie inzet tijdens de concerten. De afbraak verliep zeer vlot en dat is allemaal te danken aan al die helpende handjes!
Maar dit alles zou natuurlijk allemaal niet mogelijk zijn door de fantastische inzet van team logistiek. Door deze twee manusjes van alles konden wij onze fantastische muziek laten weerklinken voor een fantastisch enthousiast publiek. Wie heeft R2D2 nodig als je al Brechje en Victor hebt? Dus allemaal samen: “dank u wel!”
Wie zich op gaf om zondag te helpen tijdens het in/uitladen van ons ruimteschip: bekijk goed de uren op het hulpjesblad, wat die werden gewijzigd! Voor wie zich nog niet opgaf: doe dat nu!
Klaar voor de volgende missie?
We zijn allemaal volledig klaar voor onze volgende missie deze zondag, maar voor ons vertrek heeft Steven nog een boodschap voor ons:
Dag allemaal,
een warme en een hartelijke dank voor zoveel energie, zoveel tijd, zoveel toewijding, overgoten van vriendschap.
Veelzijdige aspecten van het orkestspel zijn weer fors gegroeid. Een concert blijft de beste repetitie, zoals een match de beste training is. Heerlijk, zoveel focus.
Jullie hebben heel veel mensen een mooie avond bezorgd, hoorde ik vaker dan gemiddeld.
Bij professionele muzikanten en oud-Gusoërs die langs kwamen, kreeg ik ook interessante bespiegelingen die het grote verschil tussen de beide avonden weergaven. Waar het tweede concert veel won in techniek en precisie, overklaste het eerste in het benaderen van Tchaikovky’s ambiguïteit, de catharsis, het noodlot. De muziek zelf. Dat was ook goed voelbaar aan de ongebreidelde reactie van het publiek dat de eerste avond veel meer werd geraakt door de storm en de passie, dan door netheid en proper controleren. En zo is het vaak. Hoe meer de patronen gevormd worden, en de controle groot wordt, hoe minder ruimte om de zeggingskracht van het moment voorrang te geven. Het is een boeiende en nooit-eindigende kruising tussen controle en loslaten, die muziek heet.
We krijgen een derde kans, een derde mooie avond. Mikken we samen tussen gevoel en verstand? Tussen controle en loslaten? Tussen doorleefd en proper? Tussen riskant en veilig? Tussen catharsis en salonmuziek? Tussen kunst… en kitsch?

GUSO werft aan
Aan het hoofd van iedere geslaagde missie staat een team van leiders die de troepen de juiste richting in sturen. Voor missie 2024-25 zijn we nog opzoek naar enkele leden om het bestuur te vervoegen. Hieronder zien jullie een beschrijving van alle functies binnen het bestuur en de hulpjes van het bestuur. Is er een functie die je aanspreekt? Stuur dan een mailtje of berichtje naar onze Jedi Grand Master Marthe! Niet alle functies zijn vrij, maar er kan zeker gepuzzeld worden.
1. Voorzit(s)ter (Jedi Grand Master)
Eindverantwoordelijk voor het reilen en zeilen binnen het GUSO. Voornamelijk bestaat deze taak uit delegeren, overzicht houden, timing controleren en ingrijpen wanneer problemen zich voordoen.
2. Vice-voorzit(s)ter
Als rechterhand van de Jedi Grand Master, is de Jedi Knight de steunpilaar van het GUSO. Hij of zij detecteert en lost tijdig knelpunten op binnen de bezetting van het orkest, coördineert audities en staat in direct contact met nieuwe leden en externe partijen.
3. Penning
Deze Jedi bewaakt het budget van het GUSO, volgt subsidies op en beoordeelt investeringen. Hij of zij beheert de financiële transacties en houdt toezicht op openstaande schulden, terwijl ook de fysieke kassa van het orkest wordt beheerd.
4. Logistiek
Het logistieke team is verantwoordelijk voor alles wat organisatie betreft tijdens de stages en concerten: locatie, transport van grote instrumenten, etc.. Moet er iets geregeld worden? dan staat team logistiek klaar.
5. Secretaris/-esse
Communication is key! Daarom is er de functie van de secretaris. Deze functie wordt gecombineerd door twee personen. De secretaris maakt te fantastische nieuwsbrieven en noteert tijdens de vergaderingen. De boekjesmakers is verantwoordelijk voor alle boekjes: instapbrochure, stageboekjes, programmaboekjes, etc.
6. PR
Deze functie wordt gedeeld door 3 personen: PR-vrienden en genodigden, PR-sponsoring en PR-promo. PR-vrienden en genodigden is verantwoordelijk voor de ticketing, het onthaal van de vrienden en de verplichte genodigden. PR-sponsoring zorgt dat het GUSO vette sponsordeals kan binnenhalen, en PR-promo is de propagandamachine die ervoor zorgt dat iedereen naar onze concerten komt kijken.
7. Animatie
Dit team zorgt voor een leuke, positieve team spirit binnen het GUSO met activiteiten voor, tijdens en na repetities en concerten. Ook op stage zijn ze verantwoordelijk om niet-repetitiemomenten op te vullen.
9. Reisbestuur
Zij bezorgen de leden een onvergetelijke week in het buitenland. Eentje om nooit te vergeten, eentje waar jarenlang over gesproken zal worden,…
10. hulpjes van het bestuur
- Archivaris: Houdt het multimedia-archief van het GUSO bij. Deze taak is gekoppeld aan webmaster.
- Webmaster: beheert de website, en past deze aan naar de wensen van bestuursleden.
- Partituurmeester: beheert, scant en print de partituren. Voor de eerste repetitie zijn de strijkerspartituren voorzien van boogstreken.
- Concertmeester: verantwoordelijke voor het (op tijd) stemmen op repetities, aanvoerder van de eerste violen en hele orkest.
- Aanvoerder: je kent ze allemaal. Ze zitten vooraan in de sectie en zorgen dat dat zooitje ongeregeld een orkest wordt dat prachtig speelt.
- Host solisten: is het eerste aanspreekpunt van de solisten waarmee het GUSO het genoegen heeft om te mogen samenwerken.
8 mei = grote animatie avond
Was je ook al triest dat er volgende woensdag geen repetitie is? Niet getreurd, want team animatie heeft een knotsgekke avond gepland! Wat kan je verwachten? Karaoke, drankspelletjes en vooral heel veel plezier! Zelfs Yoda zal volledig uit de bol gaan!
Call for help!
Hoor je dat ook? Enkele sterrenstelsels verder roept een orkest om hulp! Koninklijk orkest Zanglust uit Tielt moet op zondag 19 mei twee examens begeleiden van leerlingen die afstuderen aan de muziekschool. Ze kampen echter met een chronisch tekort aan blazers. Wie kan hen helpen?
Wie hebben ze nodig?
- 1 hoboïst
- 1 fagottist
- 2 hoornisten
- 1 trombonist
- 1 trompettist
- evt. enkele 1e violen
Praktisch
- repetities: vrijdagavond om 20u in de muziekschool van Tielt
- concert: zondag voormiddag 19 mei, Gildhof Tielt
- repertoire: fluit concerto van Chaminade en pianoconcerto van Grieg

I must admit that my knowledge of Star Wars isn’t very extensive, but a newsletter on May 4th is something you just can’t ignore, right? So, to all the Star Wars fans: May the 4th be with you!
Next week, we’ll be embarking on our spaceship for the final mission of this semester, so here’s everything you need to know to make sure we complete that mission successfully!
Thank you from (and for) logistics
Team Logistics would like to extend a big thank you for your efforts during the concerts. The teardown went very smoothly, and that’s all thanks to all the helping hands!
But of course, none of this would have been possible without the fantastic dedication of the logistics team. Thanks to these two Jacks-of-all-trades, we were able to make our fantastic music resonate for a fantastically enthusiastic audience. Who needs R2D2 when you’ve got Brechje and Victor? So, let’s all say together: “thank you!”

Dear all,
A warm and heartfelt thank you for so much energy, so much time, so much dedication, all infused with friendship.
Versatile aspects of orchestral play have once again seen significant growth. A concert remains the best rehearsal, just as a match is the best training. Delightful, so much focus.
You’ve brought joy to many people’s evenings, I’ve heard more than usual.
From professional musicians to former GUSO members who stopped by, I received interesting reflections that highlighted the significant difference between the two evenings. While the second concert excelled in technique and precision, the first surpassed in approaching Tchaikovsky’s ambiguity, the catharsis, the fate. The music itself. This was also clearly felt in the unrestrained reaction of the audience, who were much more moved by the storm and passion of the first evening than by neatness and proper control. And so it often is. The more the patterns are formed, and control becomes great, the less room there is to prioritize the expressive power of the moment. It’s an intriguing and never-ending intersection between control and letting go, which we call music.
We get a third chance, a third beautiful evening. Shall we aim together between emotion and reason? Between control and letting go? Between heartfelt and proper? Between risky and safe? Between catharsis and salon music? Between art… and kitsch?
I look forward to hearing and seeing what comes,

GUSO is recruiting
At the helm of every successful mission is a team of leaders guiding the troops in the right direction. For mission 2024-25, we’re still looking for some members to join the board. Below, you’ll find a description of all the roles within the board and the board’s helpers. Is there a role that appeals to you? Then send an email or message to our Jedi Grand Master Marthe! Not all positions are available, but there’s definitely room for maneuvering.
1. Chair(person) (Jedi Grand Master)
Ultimately responsible for the smooth running of GUSO. This role primarily involves delegating tasks, maintaining oversight, monitoring timing, and intervening when problems arise.
2. Vice Chair(person)
As the right hand of the Jedi Grand Master, the Jedi Knight is the cornerstone of GUSO. He or she identifies and resolves issues promptly within the orchestra’s lineup, coordinates auditions, and maintains direct contact with new members and external parties.
3. Treasurer
This Jedi oversees GUSO’s budget, tracks subsidies, and assesses investments. He or she manages financial transactions and oversees outstanding debts, while also managing the orchestra’s physical cash register.
4. Logistics
The logistics team is responsible for all organizational aspects during rehearsals and concerts: venue, transportation of large instruments, etc. If something needs to be arranged, the logistics team is ready.
5. Secretary
Communication is key! Hence the role of the secretary. This role is combined by two individuals. The secretary creates fantastic newsletters and takes notes during meetings. The booklet maker is responsible for all booklets: introductory brochure, rehearsal booklets, program booklets, etc.
6. PR (Public Relations)
This role is shared by 3 people: PR for friends and guests, PR for sponsorship, and PR for promotion. PR for friends and guests is responsible for ticketing, welcoming friends and mandatory guests. PR for sponsorship ensures that GUSO secures lucrative sponsorship deals, and PR for promotion is the propaganda machine that ensures everyone comes to our concerts.
7. Animation
This team fosters a fun, positive team spirit within GUSO with activities before, during, and after rehearsals and concerts. They are also responsible for filling non-rehearsal moments during tours.
9. Travel Board
They provide members with an unforgettable week abroad. One to never forget, one that will be talked about for years…
10. Board Assistants
- Archivist: Maintains GUSO’s multimedia archive. This task is linked to the webmaster.
- Webmaster: Manages the website and customizes it according to the board’s preferences.
- Scoremaster: Manages, scans, and prints scores. For the first rehearsal, bowings are provided on the string parts.
- Concertmaster: Responsible for tuning (on time) at rehearsals, leader of the first violins and the entire orchestra.
- Section Leader: You know them all. They sit at the front of the section and ensure that the motley crew becomes an orchestra that plays beautifully.
- Solist Host: Is the primary contact person for the soloists with whom GUSO has the pleasure of collaborating.
May 8th = big animation evening
Were you also sad that there’s no rehearsal next Wednesday? Don’t worry, because the animation team has planned a crazy evening! What can you expect? Karaoke, drinking games, and above all, lots of fun! Even Yoda will be partying hard!
Call for help!
Do you hear that too? In a few star systems away, an orchestra is calling for help! Royal Orchestra Zanglust from Tielt needs to accompany two exams on Sunday, May 19th for students graduating from the music school. However, they’re suffering from a chronic shortage of brass players. Who can help them?
Who do they need?
- 1 oboist
- 1 bassoonist
- 2 horn players
- 1 trombonist
- 1 trumpeter
- Possibly a few 1st violins
Practical information
- Rehearsals: Friday evening at 8 pm at the music school in Tielt
- Concert: Sunday morning, May 19th, at Gildhof Tielt
- Repertoire: Flute concerto by Chaminade and piano concerto by Grieg
